The co-authors of Canada and the Nuclear Arms Race*, both associated with Project Ploughshares, have assembled nine new essays to serve the campaign for disarmament. Topics include current nuclear arsenals, existing treaties, and difficulties in achieving total nuclear disarmament. Arguments for nuclear weapons, for limited nuclear war, verification procedures, weapons in space, and Canadian roles in NORAD and NATO receive careful analysis. The primary goal of all contributors to the book is the establishment of Canada as a nuclear-weapon-free zone; it is to this end that all arguments are directed.

The clear, carefully reasoned arguments by writers active in the disarmament movement should serve well the editors' goal of public debate as a catalyst for Canadian government action for nuclear disarmament. Like most single-viewpoint anthologies, this one will probably strengthen some waverers but convince few opponents. Historical background material, detailed end-notes and an index enhance the possibility of student use in senior high school courses or debating groups.
