PADDLE TO THE SEA.
National Film Board of Canada, 1985. Sound Filmstrip. 110 frames. $45.00. Includes 1 cassette. Distributed by McIntyre.
Volume 16 Number 6
This filmstrip is based on Halling's famous book, a sentimental but evocative story of a tiny carved canoe and figure that voyage from the Nipigon country through the Great Lakes to the Atlantic. The filmstrip treats the story as fact, i.e., going through real ship channels and real human hands, as we'd experience it today. The frames are all place-authentic and give a natural picture of the Great Lakes system in all its beauty and economic exploitation. In some ways this authenticity of visuals is more effective than the artist's sketches from the book. The narration is gentle, always subordinate to the visuals. Highly recommended.
