Volume 17 Number 1 1989 January Every parent whose children voluntarily place themselves in competitive situations, whether in sports, arts or academics, must determine his or her role in making this competition a positive experience for the children. Spink draws on his decade of experience in working with young athletes to provide a viable course of action and accompanying rationale for the parents of children of any age who compete in organized sports. After an opening chapter on his concept of the value of sport, Spink outlines four types of parents, differentiated by their attitudes towards the relative importance of fun and of winning in their children's sporting activities. The following chapters detail methods by which parents can help their offspring accept victory and defeat and develop a positive self-image through participation in athletics. Although the book is well written and very well researched with a comprehensive bibliography, one questions its relevance in a secondary school library. The book, after all, does not include a section that outlines methods by which the child might educate the parent about the best means of providing emotional support for the child's athletic endeavours.
