I wish this book had been written a dozen years ago. The young adult with a yen to do something just a bit different from the rest of the crowd—whether it be foreign travel, volunteer work or overseas study—will find it an invaluable guide.

The book is neatly divided into three main sections dealing with work, travel and study. Each of these has been further broken down into short articles that explore tips from others who have done the same things and give background information and related nitty-gritty. The bulk of the book is given over to detailed breakdowns of the programs and organizations. Contact names and addresses, as well as necessary qualifications, costs and tips on applying successfully, are given.

There is something here for everyone, regardless of pocket-book, regional location or academic interest. Some experiences may be had for little more than the price of the stamp on the application, while a month-long bicycle tour of Europe can cost five thousand dollars. And there is much in between.

Photographs, an index, and an appendix of addresses enhance the appeal and utility of this book. It is destined to be well thumbed by students and may very well lead to a significant experience that changes the direction of a young life. At the very least, it will be a source of reverie for many a fertile imagination.
