CIP Post-secondary Reviewed by Catharine Joan MacDonnell Volume 17 Number 1 1989 January Changing Patterns is a scholarly collection of writings that celebrate the history of feminism in Canada without eulogizing it. The individual topics, ranging from the changing nature of the family to the treatment of women by a male-dominated medical profession, are incisive, concise and illuminating. The research component is evident and the copious bibliographical entries for each theme are current and comprehensive. As one would suspect from a perusal of the authors' credentials and occupations, a feminist bias is present throughout the book. But this is much more than a collective treatise on longstanding inequities. It is, rather, the stripping of the female psyche to reveal a new reality-one in which Canadian women are not deviant because they do not think as men. While seemingly aimed at a university/college audience, the book could be used by anyone (with good reading skills) looking to study Canadian feminism. The wealth of women authors and their works, which are quoted throughout, gives the reader confidence that the conclusions and inferences are reliable and authentic. It is a "must read" for men, students and women concerned with their own destiny. While the book cannot, of itself, eradicate the oppression of women, it does effectively present the progress to date of a variety of feminist movements as well as offer a glimpse into the future—a future which promises more recognition and validation of the need for reform.
