This small book surveys many of the more interesting buildings. Over the past decade, the authors travelled many miles to collect information and do the drawings that describe the variety of churches. There are fifty reproductions of fine line ink drawings that accurately describe the variety of churches with their steeples, bell towers, Gothic windows and majestic stand in the rural landscape. Each building shows the reliance on British and European traditions combined with local skill and ingenuity in working with wood, brick and stone. The critical artistic eye might question the lack of a panoramic setting, which would visually inform us of the surrounding landscape, but that does not detract from our focus on church architecture. Each drawing is accompanied by a short text, which again, in many cases, could have been longer. The information includes both the history of the church and interesting vignettes and references to well-known architects, clerics and politicians. The book has a strong sewn binding and opens flat. This is an enjoyable little book that can add to our understanding of rural life in central Canada. Gary Robertson, Thom Collegiate, Regina, Sask.
