Ages 4 to 8 Reviewed by Marilyn Aldworth Volume 17 Number 1 1989 January This is the third of Stephanie Poulin's appealing and popular books about young Daniel and his escapist cat, Josephine. In this adventure, Daniel goes to his cousin's farm in the country to celebrate his birthday, but sadly has to leave his dear Josephine behind. Unbeknownst to Daniel and his family, Josephine manages to sneak along in the trunk of the car. As soon as she is discovered, she takes off in what is just the beginning of a great chase through the farmyard. We get to see Daniel, his cousin and his cousin's dog and cat discover just how wily this cat Josephine can be. Through pigpen, pasture, hen-house, barn and field, Josephine keeps her erstwhile captors in hot pursuit. The ending is delightful and in keeping with Josephine's colourful personality. By now, the vivid illustrations and story format are familiar to Poulin readers. The full-page illustrations and complementary pencil sketches on opposing pages really pick up and match the story-line. A nice balance of text and vivid pictures makes this book very well suited to the primary grades. Unfortunately, the binding of this book is of very poor quality and the pages of my review copy were completely separated from the cover after one gentle reading.
