CIP Grades 6 and up Reviewed by Daphne Nelson Volume 17 Number 1 1989 January Early Peoples was developed in conjunction with the TVOntario series "Origins: A History of Canada." The book follows the structure and sequence of the programs in the video and so can be used either in conjunction with the series or independently. Its subject matter is the history of the people of Canada up to 1885, and the book deals not only with the native peoples but also with loosely related topics such as the Beringia land bridge theory, Charles Darwin, and the Aztecs. And herein lies the problem. Because the subject matter is so varied. It would be difficult to incorporate all of the topics into most social studies courses. The three chapters include a number of well-chosen colour photographs, maps, drawings and historical documents to illustrate the text. A seventy-one-word glossary is also included. Perhaps the most interesting and most useful parts of this book, especially to those concerned with "Language across the Curriculum." are the suggestions for discussion, research and creative projects that accompany each unit. The projects are intended to stimulate writing and range from writing a poem to designing a poster to preparing a news report. While this book would be a worthwhile purchase for schools intending to use the video, it would probably find only minimal use in most schools.
