CIP Post-secondary Reviewed by Walter Kalyn Volume 17 Number 1 1989 January This collection of essays and short musical compositions was published to honour Helmut Kallmann, a historian of Canadian music and musical life. The collection includes critical and scholarly essays and bibliographical studies on various aspects of music in Canada. Topics covered vary from historical research on music in New France to such topics as "Maurice Ravel in Canada." 'The Glenn Gould Out takes" and "Notes on Violet Archer." The book claims to represent "many different regions and both national languages." It does contain articles in both English and French. outside of one article on the Royal Navy and music in British Columbia and one on music instruction in Nova Scotia. However, the book seems to concentrate on central Canada. Consequently, I question the validity of the title, Musical Canada-but then, according to some, nothing significant ever happens in the west anyway. Most of the topics covered in this collection would be of interest to music historians and scholars.
