For those of us brought up on Foster Hewitt's "Hello Canada and hockey fans in the United States and Newfoundland" or Danny Gallivan's "scintillating spinoramas," Dick Irvin's call of a "Hockey Night in Canada" broadcast may sound a little less dramatic than we would prefer. However, his first hockey book is first rate.

There are three main reasons why this book should have a place in personal and public libraries. First, it is a rambling autobiography of Irvin's twenty-seven years as sportscaster and hockey announcer, and as such it is insightful, entertaining and informative. Second, it is as the subtitle suggests, a biography of Dick Irvin Sr., and it is a wonderful journey back through the days from the early 1900s to the mid-1950s.

However, this book is more than just a biography and an autobiography of a man and his son. Most importantly, it is a personal reminiscence filled with quotes and anecdotes about the world's greatest teams, players and coaches. Chapter titles like "Jocks in the Booth,", "Flower Power.", "The Best Team" and "The Best Games" will whet the appetite of all true hockey fans. Oh yes, there is some bias here, but there are no axes to grind.

The table of contents, index, and large print make for easy reading and cross-referencing. The thirty-two pages of black-and-white photos capture key moments in the lives of these two men and of hockey in Canada. My copy had sixteen unprinted pages. Hopefully, your copy will have all its pages intact.

Recommended.
