CIP Kindergarten to Grade 3 Reviewed by Nancy Tully Volume 17 Number 1 1989 January Seal is Lost, Montreal born Priscilla Galloway's fourth title for children, is a charming picture-book story about a young child named Hugh who loses his favourite stuffed toy, Seal, but finds a real kitten, Ginger. With "Supergran's" loving help, Hugh overcomes his feelings of loneliness for Seal and accepts Ginger as his own. The characters, especially Seal, come to life, and young children will be able to relate well to the theme of losing a favourite toy. The bright, colourful and cheerful collage illustrations are done by Canadian illustrator Karen Petkau. Children will enjoy the "cut and paste" technique, especially the different textures (in the materials used to make the animals and toys. This is a simply done yet sensitive story for young children that will lend itself well to discussion about pets, families, and losing things (or people) we love. Children might enjoy trying out their own collage creations as a follow-up. A nice addition to a school or public library picture-book collection.
