CIP Grades 11 and up Reviewed by Jean Farquharson Volume 17 Number 1 1989 January William Edward Middleton (1860-1948) is described as Ontario's most often quoted judge, whose written judgments are still cited. The author, John D. Arnup, lawyer and judge, worked with Middleton. An avid reader, renowned botanist and outdoorsman, Middleton served as Justice of the High Court of Ontario for thirty-three years. He is renowned for his incredible memory, keen mind, and organizational powers as well as his politeness and kindness to all. He thoroughly revised the Rules of Practice in 1913, revised and consolidated the Public Statutes of Ontario from 1924 to 1927, sat on several important commissions, and settled several famous legal cases. In judging the Kellogg brothers' Corn Flake suit, Middleton wittily commented: I have treated the case as though the product was one of real commercial value. My analysis of it would be that it is 44% advertising, 44% profit, 1% carton, 1% flavouring, and the food value is a 'trace merely'. Students of law interested in its history will find the book useful for historical names and references as well as for a study of Middleton's life. The book contains notes, index and photographs.
