THE FINE ART OF MURDER. Quogan, Anthony. Toronto, Collins. 1988. 255pp. cloth, $22.95. ISBN 0-00-223283-9. CIP.
Volume 17 Number 1
Currently a professor at York University, Quogan has a long academic career, especially in theatre, where he has also acted. This novel's hero, an English playwright, is a visiting drama teacher at Ontario's Wacousta University. The student cast and crew of his latest production, "Armageddon Excuse Me Fox-Trot." are systematically being murdered. The murder weapons and methods point to some unknown sexual symbolism. Working with the police, the playwright is called upon to help unscramble the clues, one of which, a scrap of a photograph, is consistent with each death. Character development is sufficiently thorough to keep the reader intrigued. The author's clues are well placed and paced. The reader is drawn inexorably into discovering the killer, second-guessing the novel's characters. An engrossing rainy day read, it is peopled with an interesting array of realistic characters in recognizable locales within the Toronto area. Murder mystery fans will enjoy this one and look forward to more from Quogan. Despite the sexual symbolism, language and scene descriptions would be quite acceptable to age groups from the mid-teens to adult. Recommended.
