A wizard and a dragon colourfully adorn the shiny black cover of these five "magical tales." I did not find the stories very magical or very interesting, either. The language is not inventive, the dangers are never severe, and trickery replaces the evil of traditional tales. The black-and-white illustrations resemble school-book drawings and as a result they do not help the stories to soar. However, this nice blandness may appeal to some, especially to those who do not believe in giving children striking symbolic forms of existential dilemmas, as traditional fairy tales do.
