JINGLE BELLS
Maryann Kovalski.
Volume 17 Number 2
"I want to see everythingl" says little Jenny on a visit to New York City with her grandmother. Here is another delightful book from Maryann Kovalski, this time featuring the grandmother and two little girls on a flying visit to New York City. When last seen, the trio were belting out the popular children's song in The Wheels on the Bus ¹ . Written for children aged three and up, the book includes the word and music to the traditional song "Jingle Bells." The full-page illustrations show the girls getting ready for an exciting plane trip to a big city. On arrival they decide to take a hansom cab ride to the park. The authentic paintings radiate life and exuberance. The author cast her mind back to the scenes of her childhood in New York City. Her double-page spread of a city square is beautifully done. How the resourceful and energetic grandmother saves them from peril when the cab driver is swept away by a tree branch is an exciting episode in this vintage Kovalski book - humorous, lively nostalgic and a pleasure for adults to share with children. Modestly priced, well bound, beautifully written and illustrated, Jingle Bells is one of the best buys in children's books of 1988.
