Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang (Seal Books, 1981) by Mordecai Richler was a book that aroused diverse reactions among readers. For those who found it tiresome or even alarming, this tape will be unlikely to change their opinion. However, for those who revelled in its particular blend of humour, fantasy and exaggeration, listening to this tape from Caedmon will undoubtedly be a joyous experience.

Christopher Plummer provides a clear, expressive narration and uses his extensive professional actor's repertoire of voices and accents to bring each character to Iife. Appropriately chosen musical interludes and the narrator's dramatic rendition together bring out the spirit of the story. Listening to this tape, in fact, is rather like watching an old silent movie - one is tempted to cheer on the heroes and hiss at the villains.

The running time of the tape is 59 minutes, and although the story is slightly abridged, there is full coverage of Jacob's adventures in the Children's Court and the infamous Children's Prison, and his subsequent rescue through the agency of "Child Power."

Recommended for home use, for school and public libraries, and for Jacob Two-Two enthusiasts.
