Volume 17 Number 3 1989 May The text is divided into three parts: "A Guide to Canadian Children's Literature," "Using Canadian Children's Books in the Schools" and "Major English-Language Children's Book Awards." Articles on 105 authors and illustrators are arranged in alphabetical order by surname. Each article provides a brief biographical statement followed by incisive and often extensive critical analysis of the individual's works. Librarians, teachers and parents will appreciate this analytical approach which will be extremely useful for author studies and selection purposes. Sprinkled throughout this section are reproductions of ten book illustrations; nine are by illustrators included in the text. Disappointing here is the scarcity of illustrations and the total reproduction in black and white. Also included are some twenty pages of specific and practical advice for introducing Canadian children's books into the language arts curriculum. Anyone who has heard Jon Stott at teacher institutes, workshops, etc., will recognize his approach. The reading list is helpful. Fifteen Canadian awards with dated lists of award-winning books form the contents of the third section. An extensive author and title index follows; this is particularly useful because it identifies those authors and illustrators included in the bio-critical entries as well as those authors, illustrators and titles only referred to in the text.
