HOW SPORT WORKS: AN ONTARIO SCIENCE CENTRE BOOK
Illustrated by Pat Cupples.
Volume 17 Number 3
How Sport Works is the third text in the "Ontario Science Centre" series. It explains how science applies to sports, beginning with an article on the three basic body types. The authors then take us through fact sheets, charts, and fun experiments on such familiar topics as muscle groups, heart beats, flexibility, and anaerobic work-outs. There are easy-to-read and understand explanations of why curveballs curve and why spinning skaters don't get dizzy. As well, there are sections on such exotic topics as biker's bum, "turf toe," swimmer's ear, kite-fighting, "octopush," "sweet spot" and how the golf ball got its dimples. In all, there are over fifty fun experiments that kids can perform using ordinary household items. The authors not only describe in detail everything the young sport scientist will need for such experiments but also give the procedures and precautions in easy-to-follow directions. Complementing the text are numerous imaginative yet apt illustrations by Pat Cupples. How Sport Works has an excellent table of contents, a thorough index and good-sized print. Kids in grades 4 and up should enjoy these experiments and learn much from them. Highly recommended for school libraries.
