Carmen grew up in buildings deep underground and knows nothing of the surface. Together they face the Humanoids, robots with a sinister plot against humanity above ground. This story is quite readable, leads one on at a steady pace, and is suspenseful to the end. The explanations of life in the underground are not tedious and for further help the reader can turn to the glossary. The Humanoids remind me of Jack Williamson's The Humanoids (Hastings-on-Hudson. N.Y.: Ultramarine Publishing, 1980, 1949), written over thirty years ago and considered a science fiction classic today. The publisher should note that the term "sci-fi" has not been used in the science fiction field for many years. Who is the intended audience? I introduced this book to my grade 3 class. We decided that the cover's statement of "a teenage sci-fi adventure romance" referred to Greg and Carmen, about 80 percent of my students wanted me to continue reading it to them and they enjoyed it very much.
