This book will appeal not only to those who live in Ontario but also to anybody interested in wildlife in general. An Ontario teacher who is also a field editor of Ontario Out of Doors, Taylor has photographed a nice sampling of some of the more interesting (to the author) of Ontario's birds, mammals and reptiles. The numerous colour photographs are finely reproduced on good quality glossy paper, the layout is clean and appealing, and the whole package is enhanced by a small but useful bibliography, an index, a list of Ontario conservation groups, and (a detail often omitted from books of this genre) a map of the subject area.

For each of the thirty-seven animals covered there is at least one photograph with the accompanying text always in tandem. The text is lively, informative and relevant and includes the animal's vital statistics, scientific name, range, and personal observations made by the author. The photos are of uniformly high quality, many full-page size, however, the three double-page-spread photos worked less well for me as the page break splits the subject.

For balance, I would have liked to see an invertebrate or two included, the back cover photo of monarch butterflies having whet my appetite. But these are minor quibbles and do little to detract from what is an appealing wildlife book, both visually and textually.

Recommended for school libraries.
