CIP Adult/Secondary Reviewed by Pat Bolger Volume 17 Number 3 1989 May Anderson's formula plot for his one-act play has a pair of twenty-year-olds starting on a drive to Vancouver. He uses stereotypical characters in the well-off, sensitive and idealistic Carl, and Brandon, the disadvantaged grease monkey. There is considerable complexity beneath this surface, however. In the increasingly frequent references to Carl's rather, dying of cancer, and Brandon's father, who was killed in a car accident. And there is the enigmatic hitch-hiker whom they have passed several times, only to find him in the car with them at last. Young adults will enjoy reading this play: Carl and Brandon are likeable, and clear stage directions make it easy to visualize the action, all of which takes place in their car. Most readers will be intrigued to go back to see how Anderson has prepared us for the shocking conclusion. Rattle in the Dash will appeal even to students who don't enjoy reading and would also recommend Itself to drama clubs preparing for one-act play festivals. (The brief monologue. "Audition Piece." included with it might be of interest to theatre arts students, although the mature subject matter and realistic dialogue make it less suitable for classroom use.)
