The Hayes Book of Acts of Courage is a series of biographical short stories about famous and not so famous people who displayed courage and determination in their lives. Included in this book are such people as John F. Kennedy, Terry Fox, Galileo, Clara Barton (founder of the American Red Cross), Barney Clark (the first artificial heart recipient) and other lesser known heroes.

The information, which is very basic and simply stated, would appeal to students at the elementary school level and would therefore limit the book's appeal.

Great Escapes edited by Norman Shrive uses an approach similar to The Hayes Book of Acts of Courage. The underground railroad story, escape from Alcatraz, the wooden horse (World War II), and the Trapp Family Singers are just a few of the adventures explored in this book. Most of the adventures are little known, however interesting, but because the subjects are so simply dealt with, again, the market for such a book to limited.
