She sets out on a quest to discover the Young Lady, a former resident of The Castle Deep and the stone's true owner. Along the way, she encounters the horrible and ugly Brothers Blumm-twins who are as opposite in appearance as they are singular in their physical and emotional ugliness-and she finds the true friendship of Hearth and River and the love of her family. The story is full of symbolism, which may escape the younger or less able reader, but the fantasy environment will appeal particularly to lovers of the genre fantasy. The story abounds with references to ogres, fairies, legendary caves and other strange habitations. Although this is a complex tale, the detailed characterization and the intricate setting descriptions allow the story to come to life. The book is well bound and Hamilton's detailed pen-and-ink drawings are reminiscent of medieval tales, the print is clear and easy to read. The text is error-free. The story is definitely meant for mature young adults who have a preference for fantasy. I would recommend this book for resource centres and/or as part of a classroom individualized reading set.
