LETTERS OF A BUSINESSMAN TO HIS DAUGHTER G. Kingsley Ward Toronto, McClelland and Stewart, 1989. 176pp, cloth, $19.95
Volume 17 Number 4
This book, like its predecessor in 1985 (Letters of a Businessman to His Son), consists of a collection of letters containing advice for a successful business career by Canadian businessman G. Kingsley Ward. While generally in the style of the Power of Positive Thinking type books, Ward's works attempt to be more personal and topical. In the thirty letters to his daughter, Ward deals with contemporary issues such as sexism in the work place, having children in mid-career, balancing work and family, and the ethics of business. Missing, however, is how to anticipate and survive mergers, plant closures and lay-offs. Both his offspring, it should be noted, began their careers working for one of Ward's companies, so presumably those concerns did not arise. The tone is constantly upbeat, suggesting that hard work and preseverance will overcome all obstacles. Personally, I find the concept of the letters with their time-honoured homilies a little grating. Nevertheless, the author obviously spent a fair amount of time constructing these letters. This book may be as successful as his other work but once again I am reluctant to recommend it for school libraries in a hard-cover edition. A paperback edition would be more appropriate in terms of cost and will more likely be picked up by students. David Chadwick, Winnipeg, Man. |
