Volume 17 Number 4 1989 July Charles Baillairge" was a fourth-generation architect who designed not only public buildings, including Quebec Music Hall, Laval University, and Sainte-Marie de Beauce Church (he served as supervisory architect for the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa), but also many homes and townhouses, mainly in Quebec City. His superior work is reflected in the beautiful ornamentation and detail shown in the many illustrations of his interior designs in Gothic and Greek Revival styles. Baillairge" was prolific and his work was diverse; he was a master of civil engineering as well as an architect, and also an inventor and mathematician. Christina Cameron, now director general of the National Historic Parks and Sites Directorate in Ottawa, searched many archives, libraries and other sources in Quebec and Ottawa to complete this biographical study. Appendices include a summary of Baillairge's architectural works, a genealogy, an extensive bibliography of primary source material, and extensive notes. An index and a complete list of the 177 illustrations complete this handsome volume. Of limited use at the high school level, this book may be of interest to a student of architectural design and construction or of Canada's cultural history.
