BACKDOOR TO THE KLONDIKE Joan Weir Erin (Ont.), Boston Mills Press, 1988. 127pp, paper, $9.95
Volume 17 Number 4
The Klondike gold discovery of 1896 brought many attempts to find ways to get to this area of riches. This book chronicles one of the ill-fated attempts to reach the Klondike via an overland route from Edmonton. It is the story of an Irish nobleman, Algernon Yelverton, and his British company of adventurers and their attempt to reach the Klondike by land from Edmonton in the winter of 1898. Weir does a good job of reconstructing the story from archival sources. The text is well illustrated with maps and black-and-white archival photographs and is a worthwhile addition to Canadian history collections. The reading level is suitable for high school students and the book is recommended for school libraries where there is demand for information on this topic.
