This is a sports book with a difference. In fact, some of the stories of individual Indian athletes deal with their sports accomplishments only superficially. First-person narratives, views and opinions of relatives, neighbours, and acquaintances comprise this predominantly oral history of native Canadians. Consequently, the book provides not only information about the sports feats of Canadian Indians but also details of the culture and way of life of the people. What emerges is a unique concept and view of the social changes that have had an impact on native Canadians and the tremendous accomplishments Indian athletes have achieved against, in some cases, almost overwhelming odds. Athlete biographies include Tom Longboat, Steve Collins, Paul Acoose, Roger Adolph and Jack Jacobs, to name a few. The sports covered are as diverse as the athletes themselves: football, track, boxing, ski-jumping, lacrosse and rodeo. The brevity of each article (approximately twenty pages) is compensated for by the unique perspective brought to each biography. The reading level of the book would make it suitable for both junior and senior secondary students. The book fulfils a need for information on a little known aspect of native Canadian culture. It could be used as a source to encourage reluctant readers to pursue a study of Indian life and accomplishment. I recommend this book wherever supplementary material is required to support native Canadian studies. Moreover, the book stands on its own as a unique form and source of Canadian sports literature.
