Volume 17 Number 4 1989 July Temper, Temper, Nicola Morgan's third picture-book, is about Mabel Babelman's temper and how she learns to control it. At certain times, Mabel would become angry even as a tiny baby. As she grew older, she would meet the Temper, Temper Monster at the supermarket, at school and at Granny's house. One day she decides to wait in front of the mirror for the Monster, but nothing happens. Her impatience grows into anger. When the Monster appears, Mabel has never seen anything so scary, but realizing it is her own image, she begins to laugh. In learning about herself, Mabel is more able to deal with difficult situations, such as spelling a tough word, handling a stubborn cat, or meeting a rude shopper, without losing her temper. Nicola Morgan's lively illustrations are full of bright colours and interesting patterns and textures. They have matching picture frames-thick, jagged yellow lines in black borders for anger, and flowers, smiles and pretty hearts for happier limes. As in her earlier book Pride of Lions (Fitzhenry and Whiteside, 1987), Nicola Morgan creates a delightful learning situation full of humour and understanding.
