The setting, again, is Ireland. A reclusive boozer of suspicious habits is found murdered, and at first no motive is apparent. As the investigation proceeds and the all but anonymous corpse proves to be that of a man with a history of espionage and scandal who had of late been uttering wild threats against the peace of the realm, the case develops new and interesting dimensions, to say the least. Matt Minogue of Dublin's Murder Squad, a man who "routinely scares the wits out of his superiors," according to one of them who should know, takes on the investigation. Layer after layer of deception peels away, and it becomes plain that "top people," both English and Irish, are deeply involved-perhaps guilty of a cover-up murder. It's edge-of-the-chair mystery, with intricate double-dealing and devilry and careful character development blessed with a delightfully authentic Irish tang.
