Volume 17 Number 4
Writers on Writing is a collection of articles by thirty-five well-known Canadian authorities on writing and illustrating for children. In this well-organized volume, you will find Ian Wallace, among others, writing about creating a picture-book, Ted Staunton and others writing about the beginning reader, and seven very well respected writers-Jean Little and Eric Wilson, to mention a couple-discussing juvenile books. Writing for young adults is covered by Janet Lunn, Claire Mackay, Barbara Smucker and Monica Hughes. What a packed chapter that is! This informative volume goes on to discuss writing poetry, non-fiction and film writing. There is even a section about publishing books for children, reviewing, and the role of the bookstore and library. It is hard to imagine a more complete, more authoritative volume on writing for children in Canada today. Although the book was intended primarily as a "practical guide on creating books for children," I would heartily recommend it to any avid reader, especially of Canadian children's literature, from the upper Intermediate age level to adult as well as to any prospective writer. To borrow Jean Little's words, "Perhaps you are not a writer. You are that even more important person, an observant and appreciative reader. Great. We need lots more of those." Included are short biographies of all the contributors, as well as an annotated bibliography to encourage more reading. Norma Charles, Van Home Elementary School, Vancouver, B.C. |
