THE BARBADOS JOURNAL 1932
J.E.H. MacDonald
Kapuskasing (Ont.), Penumbra Press, 1989. 112pp, paper, $15.95
Volume 17 Number 5
This slim volume has all the immediate charm of a series of letters written by a sensitive, perceptive individual to an old friend and that is exactly what it is. Edited by John Sabean, The Barbados Journal is a facsimile reproduction of a notebook in which J.E.H. MacDonald recorded some evocative impressions of a Caribbean trip in 1932, the year of his death. The notebook was given to him by Doris Huestis Mills, a friend of MacDonald and his wife, Joan. The descriptions and observations it contains are acute; the sketches that accompany them are strong, direct, and generous in the information they append to the text. Together, they offer fresh evidence on the methods and the matter of one of Canada's most significant talents. J.E. Simpson, Edmonton Public Schools, Edmonton, Alta. |
