Volume 17 Number 5
Helen Porter's first novel January, February, June or July, is based in St. John's, Newfoundland. The story is centred around fifteen-year-old Heather Novak, who is a hard-working, quiet teenager still in high school. She has her first brief affair and has to deal with the consequences. Porter, who was born and raised in St. John's, has perfectly captured the mood and the dialogue of the characters. The reader can almost picture herself amidst the Novak family and can identify with their day-to-day joys, struggles, monotony, and fears. The author also has such an uncanny insight into the heart and mind of a fifteen-year-old girl that the reader cannot help but become totally involved with the character and share her fears and trepidations as the story unfolds. I would strongly recommend this book to more mature high school students and to adults, who would gain a better understanding of each other through reading it. Contains occasional explicit language. Nadiya Blaine, Ridgeway, Ont. |
