Volume 17 Number 5 1989 September Although this illustrated version of Little Red Riding Hood is beautifully designed, the modernization of the tale has rendered the plot virtually unrecognizable. The kindly-looking wolf tries to trick Red Riding Hood out of her cookies while she, recognizing him in Grandma's clothes, plays along with the charade. Neither she nor Grandma are in any danger and they eventually shoo him out of the house. Because there is no suspense, there is also no climax or subsequent release. Red Riding Hood had not strayed off the path, nor had she been warned, and there are no lessons learned. The pedestrian language only compounds the paucity of plot. The illustrations, unfortunately, cannot save this book. They suffer from inconsistency of setting as the costumes appear to be fairy-tale period but the house furnishings are modern. Grandma's house even has an electric lamp in her living room but a candle on her night table! Not recommended. Alison Mews, Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John's, Nfld.
