THE TORONTO STAR OUTDOOR GARDEN BOOK H. Fred Dale Toronto, McClelland and Stewart, 1989. 192pp, paper, $14.95
Volume 17 Number 5
The subtitle says it all. H. Fred Dale, gardening editor, the Toronto Star writes about gardens and gardening with enthusiasm and expertise. Beginning with climate, the book covers the basics: landscaping, soil, and gardening tools. Topics covered include lawns and ground cover, trees and shrubs, hedges, fruit trees, berries, grapevines, annual and perennial flowers, bulbs, roses, vegetables, herbs, and insects and diseases. Most chapters give general information followed by a question and answer section. Comprehensive charts give common and botanical names of plants, hardiness zones, height, and notes where applicable. The book is illustrated with numerous black-and-white photographs and clear line drawings. This would be a useful reference book for people planning to set up a garden in southern Ontario. The owner of an established garden would consult it frequently for maintenance, upkeep, and renewal. This title would be a first purchase in public libraries and in schools where gardening is part of the curriculum. In other schools it would be useful if students and staff are interested in gardening. Elizabeth Lockett, Metropolitan Toronto Reference Library, Toronto, Ont. |
