CREATING THE COUNTRY Rhona McAdam Saskatoon, Thistledown Press, 1989. 78pp, paper, $9.95
Volume 18 Number 1
Creating the Country is the third collection of poetry by Rhona McAdam. This volume includes forty-six poems divided into four numbered sections. A good addition is a page of notes on four of the poems giving information on a person or event. The print is large with an attractive layout pleasing to the reader. The vivid imagery and concise wording hit the reader with an intrigue long remembered. Very quickly the reader is included in the relationship between mother and child on ear piercing; a sister searching for a brother held by terrorists in Lebanon; or an immigrant facing language confusion. Many of the poems leave the reader with a definite feeling that grows and deepens. The poems are thought provoking. Insight provides an "ah" by the reader in memory or with a moment to savour. Creating the Country is a good addition to a high school library, public library and personal collections. The style, content and language give this volume a wide appeal suitable for many interests and levels. Deborah Mervold, Shellbrook Composite School, Shellbrook, Sask. |
