EBENEZER MCCOLL: FRIEND TO THE INDIANS
Frances McColl
Winnipeg, Frances McColl, 1989. 170pp, paper. ISBN 0-9694053
Volume 18 Number 2
An excellent biography, based on ample evidence of family correspondence, photographs and travel records. Well researched and documented, the text records McColl's career and the family activities spanning almost three-quarters of the ninteenth century when Manitoba's history was turbulent and any number of prominent citizens became controversial. The McColl story portrays both Winnipeg social life and Manitoba's Indian Affairs problems. Much here relates to a specific family history, too specialized for general student interest. However, such listings as reserves, bands, and charges against dishonest agents portray clearly the native vs. white controversy and the ways in which native people were defrauded. Recommended for public libraries or ones specializing in prairie history and native history. Gerald R. Brown, Winnipeg, Man. |
