Una Villiers has been an educator for twenty-three years as a teacher, curriculum consultant and vice-principal in Toronto. She is committed to the whole-language approach. Luk Mume is a collection of writings and drawings by twenty-five children, aged five to seven, studied over three years. Villiers explains the development she witnessed and the process that led to it. The book presents a fully rounded picture of whole language - from pictures and letters that can only be translated by the child to communication in sentences and paragraphs, and on to punctuation and editing. This book is aimed at teachers and parents. Large print, generous spacing, colourful illustrations and simple language make it an enjoyable, informative read. Luk Mume should guide both parents and teachers through the whole-language method and teach them how to react to the child's writing at each stage and how to recognize developing communication skills.
