Volume 18 Number 2
On the Brink, a state of the environment report, addresses the problem of wildlife extinction, both animal and plant, in Canada today. Written for the public, it groups endangered or threatened species according to seven broad 'life zones" - the Prairie Life Zone, the Pacific/Mountain Life Zone, etc. - familiar to most Canadians. This organization enables Canadians to look at their own region, become aware of the species in trouble, and become involved in conservation and recovery programs. Such programs are outlined in a special section at the back of the book, as are government agencies responsible for endangered species. Within each section of the book there are maps, colour photographs, and charts of endangered species, as well as a verbal description of the life zone and its ecosystem. For each species, there is a colour photograph or drawing, a range map, a history of the species, and a description of any protective measures that have been taken on its behalf. Highly recommended.
