Volume 18 Number 2 1990 March This young adult novel successfully combines three elements - a sea adventure story, teenage problems, and a portrait of a small Nova Scotia island and its inhabitants. Caleb and Loren have lived on Windward Island all their lives, while April is unwillingly visiting it for the first time. Caleb looks forward to attending high school on the mainland in the fall, but Loren is angry at having to leave his beloved island and his lighthouse home. Loren's father, the keeper, is to retire and the lighthouse is to be completely automated, April shares Loren's anger. Her mother has recently died and her father has withdrawn in his sorrow, making April feel abandoned. Loren's anger causes him to lash out at both his best friend Caleb and April.
