Volume 18 Number 3 1990 May This catalogue, which was produced to accompany the exhibition of the same name at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, is exactly what it is intended to be. Its merit depends totally on the knowledge and intellect of the reader; it is an excellent introduction to readers who have never been exposed to African cultures, especially to those of Black Africa. The absence of an index may make the catalogue difficult to use as reference material. However, a patient novice or researcher may, by perusing the total contents, obtain a general idea of the purpose, need and importance of the different objects to the many native hierarchies and of past and present interpretations of them. The reference to the presence and influence of the Canadian contingent of white intruders has its historical place, and while their endeavours may generate some interest, their contribution in keeping the artifacts relative to the different native societies and returning them to Canada is of immeasurable value. The significance of this publication to libraries is debatable, as it lacks depth, although it may be considered amusing when the values and attitudes of the early 1900s come to be considered.
