Allan Weiss

Volume 18 Number 3
Compiler Weiss began this work in preparation for his doctoral dissertation. He states why it is "nearly complete" in an extensive introduction. Strengths, weaknesses, principles, inclusions, exclusions, etc., explain the integrity of this work. Some statistics serve to illustrate the scope of this bibliography: 19,597 citations; 14,314 short stories in 1,308 different periodicals, anthologies and radio productions in addition to 391 author collections; and 4,966 authors. The book provides a list of common abbreviations, a list of periodical name abbreviations, a fourteen-page list of the periodicals consulted, a sixteen-page list of anthologies used, and a list of the nineteen indexes searched. An author index and a title index comprise the bulk of the work. The "Canadianess" of authors is well explained and coded. Weiss has gone to considerable effort to exhaust every conceivable source. Any shortcomings are explained along with reasons. He was unable to consult many regional and student magazines outside Ontario because of lack of money, but these admitted shortcomings should in no way detract from the value of this bibliography. The librarian and user now has access to works that would otherwise be unknown to the majority of them. This work is invaluable for every librarian from high school to research level. It is a must-have. Ted Monkhouse, Wellington County Board of Education, Guelph, Ont. |
