As the authors indicate in the introduction, this book grew out of a NFB/CBC television series of the same name. It is the first of a two-volume work and is highly recommended.

In this first volume, the authors survey Canada's military history chronologically, from the British Conquest to our reluctant entry into World War II. Among the key military events considered are the fall of New France, American invasions during their revolution and again in the War of 1812, the rebellions of 1837, various boundary disputes, the American Civil War, the Boer War and World War I. Along the way Dyer and Viljoen profile vital political and military figures such as Guy Carleton, Brock, Macdonald, Laurier, King, Sam Hughes and Arthur Currie.

The authors display a firm grasp of Canadian history, great powers of analysis and interpretation and, not infrequently, a wry sense of humour. The book is immensely readable and utterly fascinating throughout.

This is a highly opinionated book and likely will spark considerable controversy, especially where it attacks certain historical "sacred cows." Coincidentally, herein lies much of the work's appeal. It will prove an excellent reference for teachers of history and perhaps of political science and international affairs as well. Senior students should find it an exciting read provided they already have a strong background in Canadian history.
