BEWARE THE FUGITORA John H.C. Pippy St, John's (Nfld.), Breakwater, 1989. 135pp, paper, $9.95
Volume 18 Number 3
What happens when Bill and Steve find a "fugitora" left behind by visitors from outer space and use it to travel back in time to the days of wild fantasy? Who cares! It's been done - to death - and much better. Here's a typical passage: "Aich-mudyim!" he roared, pointing at Bill, who was now shaking uncontrollably. "Aich-mudyim!" he yelled, as he grabbed Bill by the hair and pulled him up and seized him by the throat and shook him. Stereotypes have a field day - from fierce (but kind) aliens to savages with spears and bad tempers (from the past, of course). The plot is wacky and garbled, the writing is unimaginative, and the characters come off as literary stickmen. David H. Elias, Winnipeg, Man. |
