NATURE AT HAND: INTEGRATED NATURE ACTIVITIES FOR YOUNG CHILDREN
Joan Wheaton Buma
Brantford (Ont.), Look What I Made, 1989. 94pp, spiral bound, $9.95, ISBN 0-9694372-0-X
Volume 18 Number 3
This companion volume to the author's first book Look What I Made (1984) and published by her desktop publishing firm is a teacher handbook containing 40 quick and easy nature craft ideas and 120 related activities. Themes developed include nature's creatures, nature's treasures, understanding nature, and caring for nature. Buma's experience as a teacher and mother are evident in the well-organized, practical arrangement of this book. Each craft is described by a list of readily available materials, the teacher pre-preparation necessary, and the clear, concise direction for completion of the activity. Simple line drawings indicate how the finished product should appear. Examples of crafts included are thumb print ladybugs, pine cone bird feeders, and making wind socks. The related activities involve nursery rhymes, action songs, fingerplays, games, nature walks, play dough and finger paint recipes, books to share, and simple scientific experiments. A seasonal index at the back lists ways in which the crafts can be adapted to different holidays and seasons. The paper is of good quality and the practical coil binding allows the book to lie flat during use. The most suitable audience for this work is teachers of pre-school and Primary children ages three to seven. Although there is nothing really unique here, this work will be useful where a well-organized nature craft book is needed. Ila Scott, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alta. |
