Volume 18 Number 3 1990 May An interesting book that lives up to the publisher's claims, Canada's Heritage in Scotland explores the similarities and the shared history of Scotland and Canada. Both are northern countries with powerful southern neighbours, and Scotland and Canada's fate and fortunes intertwine. When one studies Canadian history the contributions of people from Scotland are strikingly obvious: "It was the Scots who developed and ran the banking and finance system, led the way in education, and carved out of the wilderness pioneer farms. The spark which ignited Confederation was the alliance in 1864 of two Scottish politicians, John A. Macdonald and George Brown." Canada's Heritage in Scotland would make an ideal travelling companion on a trip to Scotland, but you do not have to go there to enjoy the many interesting stories about our Scottish heritage. Each of Scotland's regions is dealt with separately with good black-and-white photos and its connection to Canada is thoroughly described. Ged Martin is the director of the Centre of Canadian Studies at Edinburgh University and Jeffrey Simpson is a prominent Canadian television and print journalist.
