Volume 18 Number 3 1990 May This film opens with a view of the planet Earth, rather eerie background music, and a male narrator with an equally eerie voice discussing the eating habits of the dinosaur. Creative camera work gives the dinosaurs at the Tyrell Museum in Drumheller, Alberta, a lifelike appearance as the narrator tells an informative story about Albertosaurus’ search for dinner. In the following section a female narrator invites viewers to join a group of eleven children (aged four to fourteen) on a tour of the museum. The brief discussion with a paleontologist that follows covers the creation and discovery of fossils. The final two sections involve a visit to a paleoconservatory with some information on the vegetation of the time and the children's performance of the "Dinosaur Bone Song." This presentation covers the basic characteristics of various dinosaurs, the living conditions and terrain of the era, as well as available theories about extinction. Appropriate terminology is used and defined (herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, fossil). While the film serves as a basic introduction to this popular topic, its organization into several sections will allow teachers to show the third section involving a paleontologist to grade 3 and 4 students. The teacher's guide provides some teaching suggestions and reproducible outlines of the dinosaurs discussed. Closed captioning is available with a script and corresponding lesson plan ideas for the hearing impaired. This video will prove useful in collections serving elementary teachers and students.
