Volume 19 Number 1
This information book describes in detail the story of the calendar and features over two hundred fascinating facts about people and dates ranging from the 1700s to the 1990s. Clear explanations enable the reader to find the correct calendar for any year, past, present or future. The authors present the background information about the Julian or "old style" calendar set up by Julius Caesar in 46 b.c. How the Gregorian or "new style" calendar corrected the flaws in the Julian calendar is described. Proposals for a more rational and scientifically based "Sol" and "World" calendars are also given. Bear and Pamenter answer numerous questions, such as why the calendar differs year by year, why there are leap years, why the year starts on January 1st, why a week has seven days or a year has twelve months, and how Easter is calculated. Easy-to-follow charts, formulas and examples of calculations for correct calendar dates are presented along with fourteen different yearly calendars. This well-organized information book is one that both teachers and students will find useful in elementary and high school and I would highly recommend this book for every school and public library.
