The soft, colourful illustrations by Eugenic Fernandes of Canada's magnificent scenery provide a perfect accompani­ment to this delightful adventure. Thompson takes us with Jesse and her mother travelling across the country on a night train. Jesse is worried about the engineer being lonely all by himself at the front of the train when everyone else is asleep, so she gets dressed and goes to the engine with a snack for him. He invites her to keep him company driving the train. She watches "the train's big headlights cutting a thin slice out of the big round night." She manages to pull the cord for the whistle to warn a dancing moose and then a huge wolf off the track and after finally saving the train from being stung by a bee(!) she quietly makes her way back to the berth and snuggles up to her mother and falls peacefully asleep. This quiet story with the truly beautiful illustrations is adventurous enough to entertain a child on her way to bed time without becoming so exciting as to prevent the arrival of sleep.
