DAVID SUZUKI ASKS DID YOU KNOW... ABOUT LIGHT AND SIGHT
Laura Suzuki and Peter Cook
Don Mills (Ont.), Panda Books/General, 1990. unpaged, paper, $4.95
Volume 19 Number 1
The appearance of David Suzuki's name on the cover and throughout the text of Laura Suzuki's book might lead readers to assume she had collaborated with her father, rather than with writer/ cartoonist Peter Cook. The book's format has the well-known environmentalist posing a different question about light and sight on each page. Questions range from the general, "Did you know. .. what light is?" to the specific, "Did you know... why some trees have needles instead of leaves?" The explanations are brief and the cartoon illustrations are essential to understand fully the concepts being introduced. The book may be popular with the Dr. Zed crowd as a means of providing an introduction to scientific ideas. However, the lack of chapters, clear groupings of topics or index will limit the usefulness of this title to casual browsing. Rebecca Raven, Hamilton Public Library, Hamilton, Ont. |
