Volume 19 Number 1 1991 January Whenever Uncle Henry came to dinner, the children of the family were expected to sit quietly while the grown-ups talked, even though Uncle Henry was one of their favourite story-tellers when he was alone with them. One evening at dinner Uncle Henry wore an unusual shirt - hundreds of chickens in small, neat boxes covered the fabric. Eventually one of the chickens escaped from its box and scampered around Uncle Henry's stomach. The chicken then jumped into the raspberry ice cream and laid an egg, which Uncle Henry mistakenly ate but couldn't swallow. Eventually the entire flock of chickens escaped from the shirt and fluttered wildly around the room. In the end, Uncle Henry was able to return them peacefully to the boxes on his shirt, but not before the children enjoyed the wild rumpus. There are a few overdone touches in the story - the improbably large and troublesome egg, for one - but the revolt of the chickens is amusing and the illustrations add to the fun. Adele M.
